The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 Stolen Source Code

There apparently wasn’t much of a story about CD Projekt Red to report on anymore. It is currently believed that an outside source in a hack has successfully sold source code for both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. While the document indicated it was restricted for disseminating information, the condition was that the data would not be shared.

At the beginning of the week, the game company announced that its servers had been breached. CD Projekt Red revealed the data was breached. We are investigating GOG’s customer data. It appears that our customer’s data is not accessed in any way. Although the source code of current productions was to have been compromised, hackers could not steal it.

This data includes the source codes of CD Projekt Red’s game development engine RedEngine and titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, an upcoming ray-traced version of The Witcher 3, and the recent one published Cyberpunk 2077. Other documents in this category include newsletters, financial statements, contracts, legal documents, and investor relations materials.

When it became clear that the project’s data would be published for free otherwise, the hackers made a demand to pay or else the data would be sold by CD Projekt as booty to the internet. Based on the latest information, it appears this is now in effect.

A proposal by VGC states that the data should be put up for sale on the dark web with a starting bid of $1 million and a current bid of $7 million. The seller canceled the auctioned the merchandise because an outside offer was made. According to VGC, information from the cyber intelligence company Kela was part of the contract that the client was not to disclose or distribute the data, whether to the public or others.

The ransomware attack on CD Projekt Red was allegedly carried out by a group called HelloKitty. However, before the auction, the source code of CD Projekt Red’s game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, was made public. This was to increase the amount of pressure that CD Projek Red was under.

The source code mentioned above has been abandoned or, it is unknown who currently has it. Even though it was thought that CD Projekt Red aimed to limit the damage, it was theorized that the company made an offer on its own to purchase itself. This was not because of any concern at the time, as the source codes were completed before being accepted. However, the assurance was given, but because the software supplier indicated, the source codes would become available.

Instead, the company contacted the appropriate authorities, including law enforcement and information security experts, to expand its search for information. By having responsibility and involvement approached, the organization has taken steps to mitigate the effects of a potential release, especially if the number of impacted people increases.

After waiting years for that cyberattack, the right moment has finally arrived for CD Projekt. The expectations placed on the Cyberpunk 2077 were heavy, and it was n This game had to weather many criticisms last year; it was even pulled from the PlayStation Store for that time. The company’s share price fell almost in half. Therefore, there are genuine concerns that the fanbase established with The Witcher 3 could be negatively affected by such a lifetime of games.
