Saturday, June 17th Wordle #728 Hints, Clues, and Answer

Saturday, June 17th Wordle #728 Hints, Clues, and Answer. I’ve been thinking about where we are with Wordle, and it’s surprising that we’re almost at Wordle #730. That’s noteworthy because it means we’ve had two years of Wordles, even though almost no one played the game when it was Wordle #1. I last wrote this column two years ago, having started my Wordle tutorials in January 2022.

Wordle’s second anniversary coincides almost exactly with two other major events: My birthday is the following day, June 20th. I’m not as enthused about this as I was in previous years! Then comes the solstice and the official start of summer on June 21st. Huzzah!

Let’s do this Wordle—one of the last Wordles of the season!

Ranch!

Wordle Bot Analysis

I’m now on a winning streak! I’ve gotten the Wordle in three guesses in the last three days. Today, my first guess—windy, because it’s been windy lately!—cut the remaining possible solutions to just 71.

My second attempt, which was unfortunate because I intended to exclude additional vowels and other common letters, reduced that number to just one. And after some tinkering, I realized it had to be a ranch, which it was! Huzzah!

Today’s Score: Wordle Bot and I were tied today. So tying gets 0 points, but guessing in three gets 1 point, for a total of 1 point. Yay for kayaking other buckets!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “ranch” originates in North America and has Spanish etymological roots. It comes from the Spanish word “rancho,” which originally referred to a small farm or tract of land used for animal grazing. The term “rancho” is derived from the Spanish verb “rancharse,” which means “to lodge” or “to take up residence.”

During the nineteenth century, a ranch as a large-scale farming and livestock business grew popular in western United States and Canada. As Anglo-American settlers went west, they used the term “ranch” to characterize their huge agricultural businesses, which were fashioned after the Spanish rancho system.

The word “ranch” came to be linked with large farms or estates largely focused on rearing livestock, such as cattle or horses, over time. Although its origins can be traced back to Spanish influences in North America, it has become a widely recognized term in many world regions.
