30 Best Romance Anime Series and Movies

30. Spice and Wolf (2008)

Romance Anime

Spice and Wolf is certainly more your speed if you want to avoid your romance being set in the plaid-out backdrop of a high school.

It’s more of an adventure, with our protagonist, Lawrence, coming into contact with a wolf-like god, Holo.

The end aim is for Holo to return home, but the road is packed with engaging discussion, Holo being charming and obstinate, and the merchant life.

I didn’t expect to learn so much about what it’s like to be a trader in their world.

The chemistry is on point. Holo is just plain wifey material.

29. Hotarubi no Mori e (2011)

Romance Anime

This movie gives you all the nice feelings you need in life.

In terms of human love, it has a very fairy-tale-like feel while remaining close to reality.

It’s about a girl who gets into contact with a woodland spirit.

It was meant to be a one-time encounter, but the two became rather close.

The catch is that she must never come into contact with the spirit, or he will disappear.

It’s such a basic notion, yet it adds so many levels to everything; no lovely head pats, but still a real connection.

28. Lovely Complex (2007)

Aside from Meliodas, there is little love for short monarchs in the community.

And tall gals end up becoming the punchline to some joke. Lovely Complex is coming to change all of that. Best Romance Anime . The story revolves around the odd love of the short-stack Atsushi Ootani and the towering beauty Koizumi Risa.

The story is adorable, and their chemistry is well-written. The real message the show conveys is what I value most.

Sure, a lot of programs have a “love yourself” message.

On the other hand, Lovely Complex accomplishes it in a more “show don’t tell” manner, allowing it to land just a little more elegantly

27. 5 Centimeters Per Second (2007)

This movie becomes more real in 2020 since it’s about separation and the struggle to maintain a connection without being together.

If you and your significant other/best friend went to separate universities after high school, you should be well acquainted with the sense of drifting apart.

The protagonists of the show make a real effort to maintain the spark they made. But fate might make it tough at times in real life.

So, if you watch this movie, be prepared to ponder rekindling some old fires and weep some tears.

26.Junjo Romantica (2008)

It would be foolish to include exclusively heterosexual romance programs on our list, given how much grey there is regarding sexuality in recent years.

Junjo Romantica is all about the love between boys.

Although I say “boy,” there are also several older characters.

The show covers three different couples and addresses various personality types.

Some are conscious of their homosexuality, while others are still looking; some are younger, while others are older.

The show covers a lot of territory. The characters are well-written; if you’re looking for some Yaoi but don’t like ice skating, this may be your solution.

25. Kokoro Connect (2012)

Romance Anime

Kokoro Connect takes your typical high school rom-com, adds one supernatural aspect, and makes a whole new experience.

The show’s hook is that a bunch of friends begin randomly switching bodies with each other, similar to a movie farther down the list.

This, of course, results in a lot of fun moments. But it adds a great emotional weight to the whole thing.

Because if someone is in your body, they will learn things about you, no matter how hard you try to keep it a secret.

Your home life, health, and, most importantly, your internet history are all on show today!

And later on, you’ll notice something different, but you didn’t hear it from me.

24. Nisekoi (2014)

Nisekoi, in my opinion, is a reversal of Romeo and Juliet.

Let me clarify: we have two rival gangs, and the bosses of those groups each have a son and a daughter.

Instead of the two sneaking away and being together over their parents’ objections, the parents want them to date, and the kids are the reluctant party in this story.

As a result, the two pretend to maintain the peace.

They aren’t initially interested in one other, but this is a rom-com, so that will change sooner or later.

23. Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun (2014)

You’ve cern thousands of harem anime in which every girl on the street fallser in love with some naive, “kind of nice,” dull male character.

But this time, everything makes sense.

The protagonist of the series is a big-league shoujo mangaka. He’s the anime world’s Justin Bieber.

In an effort to gain his number, the main point of our show becomes his helper instead.

Best Romance Anime . If that leap of logic doesn’t give it away, this show is a comedy series with some mangaka insight and a backbone of romance. It’s also worth a look.

22. His and Her Circumstances (1998)

This show feels like Oresuki done a little bit better… alright, a lot better.

It demonstrates how the ideal student may have some messed up things in their closet, but they can also learn to love while being loyal to their somewhat nasty self.

Unfortunately, there is no bench-kun.

But the starring duo’s fun and dynamic chemistry more than makes up for it.

The first few episodes, in particular, they’re right out of Mean Girls or something.

The show does come to an abrupt end. However, the altered segment is still worth seeing.

21. Ao Haru Ride (2014)

Overcorrections may be a real problem in life; you believe you’re unattractive in one manner, so you perform a one-eighty, and now the people in your past don’t know how to feel about you.

That is the fundamental premise of Ao Haru Ride, as the main female protagonist transforms from a “girly-girl” to one of the boys, believing that since she couldn’t confess to the boy she loved in middle school, she must change for it never to happen again.

But, whoopsie, Daisy, the boy is back for a second round!

And is perplexed this time… so what happens next?

Romance, perplexity, and a few laughter.

20. Kaichō wa Meido-sama! (2010)

This begins with introducing us to an all-boys school that has recently chosen to become co-ed.

This is certain to ruffle some feathers, since high school is uncomfortable enough as it is, much alone when narrative twists are thrown into the mix.

When a girl is elected president, the boys are not impressed with her stiff demeanor. You may have looked up the title and thought, “Where do the maids fit into all of this?”

That same despotic president, though, works as a maid. And one of the Chads just found out about it.

Grab some popcorn because things are about to get nasty.

19. The Pet Girl of Sakurasou (2012)

Romance Anime

Okay, I realize the title looks a bit strange, and honestly, even after I give you the premise, it will seem strange… but you just have to trust me that the show understands what it’s doing.

Our male protagonist wants a cat in real life. But, since he can’t just make any location his kitty’s home, he needs to move to Sakurasou.

But in Sakurasou, even the outcasts find safety, most notably in quirks and whatnot, as well as a girl who can’t seem to care for herself. Best Romance Anime .

Our MC is then tasked with assisting this fair damsel, as sparks fly as usual.

Give it a watch once more. It’s not even close to being as smutty as it sounds.

18. Tamako Love Story (2014)

What is the plot if I told you Tamako is a character in this movie?

How did you find out? So, who exactly is Tamako?

She’s just your normal girl who lives in the now, isn’t too concerned about the future since she has a good job at her family’s restaurant, and truly wants to perfect her baton performance.

What is her love story about?

A childhood buddy is really into her but is a) afraid to tell her how he feels and b) has his mind set on studying in Tokyo, going Tamako behind.

What is the result of all of this? Watch the movie instead of bothering me!

17. Golden Time (2013)

Romance Anime

As far as tone is concerned, the opening of this show threw me off.

The opening scene shows a guy being lost in the city, running into another guy who is also lost, and then a girl appears on the scene and hits the other guy with flowers, sparking a Looney Toons pursuit.

With an intro like that, you would expect a ridiculous show.

The show does a fantastic job of portraying relationships.

The characters are thoroughly developed as well. And the majority of what occurs is quite normal. So, never judge a book by its first few chapters.

16. Special A (2008)

If you’ve ever seen Romance Anime rivals and thought, “Just kiss already,” this show could be up your alley.

It centers (most of the time) on Hikari Hanazono and Kei Takishima, two intelligent people who succeed at everything.

The only catch is that Kei succeeds just a bit more, and Hikari doesn’t like playing second fiddle.

So she tries her hardest to outperform Kei in anything and everything, but Kei just secretly loves her. Sure, Naruto and Sasuke may have been the first to accomplish it. But seeing a rivalry become loving is still quite fulfilling!

15. My Little Monster (2012)

This may come as a surprise, but this show is not about Lady Gaga fans.

I was sad as well.

My Little Monster, on the other hand, is fantastic.

It takes two people who don’t comprehend interpersonal relationships for different reasons.

Shizuku, the female protagonist in this unorthodox duet, is a full kuudere who can’t be bothered by anything.

Then there’s Haru, a semi-delinquent who’s passionate and owns a rooster for some reason (I had to restrain myself not to make the obvious joke here).

It’s out of the ordinary, eccentric, and wholesome.

14. Honey and Clover (2005)

Romance Anime

Honey and Clover is just a very nice Romance Anime that is also a romance.

It’s all about the college battle and how it influences the arts.

Our five protagonists all pursue various types of creation, each with their own set of reasons, objectives, and so on.

To reword my first sentence: the characters are so well written that you feel like you’re reliving your college years, which are filled with romance (ideally).

Some drama, humor, and relaxing vibes are mixed in for good measure.

But, honestly, the show’s end purpose is for you to point to a character and say, “Same.”

13. Weathering With You (2019)

I’m going to have to give it to this movie.

Outside of mythology, this is the first time I’ve heard a storyline like this.

In short, we have two primary characters who are both struggling financially.

But one day, they come upon something strange. The movie Tokyo rains constantly, but whenever the female protagonist prays for it, the sun breaks through the clouds and beams at us mere mortals. Best Romance Anime

Will this turn into a business? What are the ramifications? Is this the long-awaited Slavic Dodola’s rival?

Two of the three questions will be addressed.

12. Zutto Mae kara Suki deshita.: Kokuhaku Jikkou Iinkai (2016)

Romance Anime

That seems like a scary title. However, in real life, it just means “I’ve always liked you.”

Take that line and put it in many conversations, and you’ve got this movie.

That is not a criticism; it is just a warning that everyone in this movie loves everyone else. And they’re all terrible at explaining themselves.

But they’re all so well-written and endearing that even the ninth confession excites me. And I honestly don’t see why.

It’s about as innocent as a high school romance can get. Even if it sounds like a turn-off, it will end up being something other than what you expect.

11. Orange (2016)

I’m sure we all have regrets in life, some more serious than others.

When it comes to saving a life, the guilt may never go away.

This is the level of Naho, a girl who gets a note from her future self warning her to take excellent care of a new transfer student to ensure he remains around.

It may get rather hefty. It may become healthful.

It’s a standard shoujo, but everyone may enjoy it.

It takes a different approach than another inclusion on our list, although both are effective in their own right.

10. The Garden of Words (2013)

Romance Anime

This movie feels like soul ASMR.

It’s about a boy who skips class one day and meets a mystery lady.

They end up meeting in this lovely garden, with the rain just trickling in the background. When the boy chooses to make her some new shoes, their encounter becomes more than a one-time occurrence.

Then anything occurs in the plot, I don’t know, I’m still in the garden listening to the rain.

9. The Anthem of the Heart (2015)

Living in your little fairy tale (the genre, not the anime) is all fun and games until it starts interfering with real life.

Our protagonist had to learn this hard, as her ignorance results in a secret being revealed to the world and harming people who are extremely close to her. Best Romance Anime

She now has a “curse,” or a seal, that stops her from ever speaking again.

The school then pulls the typical “calling on someone who didn’t raise their hand” move, and she is cast in a musical.

She meets Mister Rockstar Sakagami there, and the rest, as they say, is…a spoiler.

8. Ouran High School Host Club (2006)

Romance Anime

A host club is present in Ouran High School. But what exactly is a host club?

It’s where affluent boys go all out to impress ladies in order to acquire that document. Is one of these ladies the lady of interest?

No, not really. You see, someone unconnected to the host club winds himself in debt and must disguise himself as a boy to pull it off.

She turns out to be more Chad than any of them, which makes her the ladies’ favorite.

However, she also has a killer personality “off stage,” making her highly popular with guys as well. It’s odd but amusing.

7. ReLIFE (2016)

His re-sibling (of the zero tribe) is more positive, but it is still kind of unpleasant.

The primary hook is as follows: we take a guy in his late twenties who is just failing at life, like we all are, and give him a medication that turns him into a youngster.

He must now re-enter high school and learn why teens are so anxious.

Will he meet someone and fall in love along the way?

I’m not here to judge whether or not that’s odd, considering his real age. But this was the simplest show to binge.

6. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)

Romance Anime

In this movie, the supernatural obviously takes a back seat to romance. However, it gives it justice.

As the title suggests, our female protagonist has the power to go back in time.

Of course, she uses it to correct minor errors. But, as you can expect, not all issues can be resolved like way.

And then, maybe, that second violin begins to play in her ear, and she is tempted to utilize such authority… but is that fair to the other person?

Who knows? Ask your neighborhood sci-fi preacher today!

In all seriousness, great movie. For some reason, I like the aunt the most.

5. Kimi no Na wa. (2016)

This movie was a tremendous undertaking. She quickly enthralled the whole Romance Anime community and beyond.

It has supernatural aspects. But it feels real:

  • Looking for your kindred spirit.
  • Pursuing the red line of fate.
  • Body-swapping a little bit like it’s Freaky Friday.
  • All normal things people do.

Everything is crystalline and flowing. And when combined with terrific music, it makes for a real treat of a theatrical experience.

4. Nana (2006)

Romance Anime

This show is about a bunch of things, including music, friendships, goals, rivalries, and so on.

But love, whether between friends or couples, is a recurring topic that may take many forms.

I’ll warn you that some of the vessels in this show will make you want to pull out your hair. Some will make you cry, while others will be the purest manifestation of objectives you’ve ever seen. Best Romance Anime

To the point that you feel like a fly on the wall, the series just shows the ups and downs of relationships to that extent.

It’s an more senior show, and neither the anime nor the manga have been (or will ever be) completed.

Nonetheless, I cannot suggest this show highly enough; it is an amazing must-see.

3. Toradora! (2008)

Romance Anime

Toradora’s ability to balance serious and silly stuff makes it so wonderful.

Taiga can be about the prettiest thing in the world, slashing people with her sword, pouting like the tsundere queen, and hanging out with Ryuuji and Inko.

However, she is subjected to intense speeches, ideas, and actions.

As a silly “ha ha” moment, I suggested she fight people with a sword. But later on, the identical performance had me on the edge of my seat.

Overall, it has a little bit of everything. And if you can get beyond the first half’s blue balling, you’ll find this show to be one of the finest.

2. Your Lie in April (2014)

Your April Lie is terrible in every way. Despite this, it reaches a high point that makes you feel like you can do anything.

The incredibly bright colors and cheerful mood of the first few episodes truly lull you into the notion of an optimistic rom-com, so you may not notice the show’s depth at first.

But suddenly, the curtains fall, and we see real people in the process of mending, with some messed up backgrounds.

Music is also a recurring motif throughout the show, which makes the entire thing incredibly tranquil.

1. Clannad (2007)

Clannad is well-known for being a tearjerker.

The world is so well constructed, the characters so deep and connected, and the writing so realistic that you feel like you’re watching real people go about their daily lives.

This is because not only is the focus on the show a little bit bigger but relationships are also brought to their natural conclusion.

Furthermore, it isn’t all down like Kuzu no Honkai or all up like a pure comedy. It moves up and down, and each bend hits the love muscle.

Just hearing the music will make at least half of you reading this cry on order.

As far as Romance Anime goes, this is, without a suspicion, one of the absolute monarchs who set the standard for future generations.
